Short background- Salford

Salford is a city next to Manchester and part of the Greater Manchester conurbation. It has an overall population of 240,000. Irwell and Riverside ward the area we will undertake the project has a population 13, 000 inhabitants made up of 42% in social housing.

The area does not have a main high street but a series of small shops with a small shopping Centre at one end. These shops tend to be takeaways, small supermarkets and low cost clothes shops. There are some commercial areas with small industrial units and a few small factories.  The population of the area is for the 28% composed of ethnic minority communities where the national average is 19%.

The population is made up of 70.8% White British, 8.8% white other including Eastern European migrants, 5.8% African Caribbean, 2.8% Chinese and 1.8% Indian. In addition, there is a large ultra-orthodox Jewish population as well as a traveler site for gypsy and Romany community on the outskirts of the area.  11.6% of the population are in in fuel poverty. Education achievement is low with 29% of 16 year obtaining 5 GSCE grade A-C. There are high levels of deprivation in the area with 3 of the areas being in the 1% most deprived in England. Life expectancy for a man is 74.2 and for a woman 80.5 which is 5 years below average for England and 2 years below for women. Youth unemployment is at 20% and long term unemployment is at 25%, with child poverty at 45.2 %.

The area has changed over the recent years with a rise in ethnic minority groups and migrants in the area. This has caused tension between the existing white population and the emerging BME groups. Communities are often considering their own communities rather than looking outwardly into the broader community. This approach has created areas of tension between the different religious and BME communities.  This project not only intends to identify the different communities but also develop better mutual understanding between the different groups.
